Course Details
This assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed for candidates to demonstrate their occupational competence in the fire, emergency, and security systems industry, either full technician or one or more of the limited scope specialist technician categories:
1. Full Technician - full scope
OR
2. Installation Test & Commissioning Technician - limited scope
3. Installation Technician - limited scope
4. Test & Commissioning Technician - limited scope
5. Service & Repair Technician - limited scope
You will be assessed against the requirements of the route you wish to take. I.e. a full technician will be assessed against all six assessment requirements and a maintenance only technician will be assessed against four of the assessment requirements.
Candidates wishing to complete the FESS EWA, once enrolled at a centre will have 12 months to complete the assessment from the initial date of registration with BPEC. The assessment is designed to be completed once the candidate supporting evidence folder is achieved and should take no more than one day in a BPEC approved centre to achieve.

FESS Engineers with a minimum of evidencable 5 years industry experience. The Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Experienced Worker Assessment (FESS EWA) is an industry and JIB/ECS approved assessment for experienced FESS engineers wishing to prove competence in this sector and obtain a ECS Gold card.
The assessment is designed only for experienced operatives who already have an understanding of the fundamental requirements of fire systems and who wish to demonstrate competency and professionalism and obtain an industry recognised competency card.
To demonstrate competency the candidate must satisfactorily complete the relevant elements of the assessment. There are up to 6 elements to the assessment (see chart 1 in the self-assessment checklist to identify the assessments required to apply for the relevant category of card):
- Core Skills (practical)
- Service & Repair (practical)
- Installation (practical)
- Testing & Commission (practical)
- Underpinning Knowledge Test
- Professional discussion
Candidates wishing to enrol on the FESS EWA will need to be able to evidence through a detailed CV and Continuous professional development (CPD) a minimum of 5 years demonstratable industry experience in their chosen pathway.
Candidates will need to demonstrate a minimum of 5 years’ experience working within the industry. Candidates must be able to evidence the achievement of the ECS HS&E Assessment.
